I have been using Arokh´s OpenWRT build for WNDR3700 with great success for a long time (more info: »). However, the latest versions do not offer the greatest performance - the fastest IMO is build r25460 from 11 February 2011 (at least when combined with the Intel wireless clients I am using).Build r25460 is also very stable and has better wireless performance than Netgear's stock firmware. It is available here, for those of you that may wish to try it: » (see flashing instructions in first link; it is of course possible to revert to the stock firmware if needed). Folks this seems to be one of the more current threads related to the WNDR3700 (in my case V2). I have been reading about various firmwares and have never used one myself since my routers have always done what I needed. However I'm in a place where I want two things that Netgear cannot give me. One is their restrictions, if I want the router down at say midnight until 6AM, it will stop any new sessions, but it won't terminate existing one.

So if some streaming is being done, it'll continue all night long. Two, I'd like a stronger 5Ghz channel. I also have a Netgear WNDR2000 to repeat my 2.4Ghz band due to the size of the house. I don't want to spend tons of time, I don't want to build things, I want to flash a firmware, configure it and be done with it. I know this is an old thread, but google still has it in the top search results. I used inssider, and flashed dd-rt, gargoyle, and stock netgear firmware on the router. By far best is the netgear's firmware.
With the alternatives, the router broadcasts just on channel 6. Netgear's broadcasts on channels 2+6.
My boxee streaming 720p media with the alternative firmware would skip and have to rebuffer (ANGER!!!!). With netgear i see absolutely no lag whatsoever streaming 1080p video. Netgear: -60 dbm, alternatives -80dbm.
The only problems i have had with netgear is flashing beta firmware. They constantly lose connection and are buggy. You must resist the temptation and stay with their stable releases. I haven't tried dd-wrt on my WNDR3700v2, but I've heard that netgear's firmware provides better throughput. Unfortunately, the other features of the netgear firmware are not so good, such as reliably displaying attached devices, port reservations, throughput, etc. That's where open firmwares such as dd-wrt are better.

I found the features of the dd-wrt gui on an old linksys wrt54 to be better than what netgear provides on the WNDR3700, which is pretty pathetic on the part of netgear. Unfortunately, neither alternative is perfect. If netgear would release the source code for the radios, I'm sure open firmware would be much better, but I won't hold my breath for that to happen. You dead now riddim zippy album.
