Dorham's talent is frequently lauded by critics and other musicians, but he never received the kind of attention or public recognition from the jazz establishment that many of his peers did. For this reason, writer said that Dorham's name has become 'virtually synonymous with underrated.' Dorham composed the ', which first appeared on 's album Page One. Contents.Biography Dorham was one of the most active trumpeters. He played in the big bands of, and and the quintet of.
He joined Parker's band in December 1948. He was a charter member of the original cooperative. He also recorded as a sideman with and, and he replaced in the Quintet after Brown's death in 1956.
In addition to sideman work, Dorham led his own groups, including the Jazz Prophets (formed shortly after took over the Jazz Messengers name). The Jazz Prophets, featuring a young on piano, bassist, and tenorman, with guest on guitar, recorded a live album in 1956 for.In 1963 Dorham added the 26-year-old tenor saxophonist to his group, which later recorded (the group also featured a young ). The friendship between the two musicians led to a number of other albums, such as Henderson's,. Dorham recorded frequently throughout the 1960s for Blue Note and, as leader and as sideman for Henderson, and others.Dorham's later quartet consisted of some well-known jazz musicians: (piano), (double bass), and (drums). Their recording debut was for the ' New Jazz label, an album which featured mostly ballads.
An earlier quartet featuring Dorham as co-leader with alto saxophone player had released an album together under the name 'Kenny Dorham/Ernie Henry Quartet.' They produced the album for in 1957 with double bassist Eddie Mathias and drummer. In 1990 the album was re-released on CD under the name 'Kenny Dorham Quartet featuring Ernie Henry.' During his final years Dorham suffered from kidney disease, from which he died on December 5, 1972, aged 48.On June 25, 2019, listed Kenny Dorham among hundreds of artists who recorded for record labels whose master recordings were reportedly destroyed in the.

In 1969 he returned to Lester Koenig's label for this lone effort, a quartet set with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Chuck Domanico, and drummer Elvin Jones. The music is fairly free, particularly Kessel's four originals (which include 'Blues, Up, Down & All Around' and 'Two Note Samba'). Even Paul Simon's 'The Sounds of Silence' and 'This Guy's in Love With You' are turned into reasonably creative jazz by the all-star group.
Although none of the musicians was associated exclusively with the avant-garde (Elvin Jones came the closest but never quite embraced free jazz), they show the influence of the explorations of the era, using aspects of the innovations as a logical way to stretch the jazz mainstream. Pianist Walter Bishop, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Art Blakey complete the impressive group that is heard on the OJC CD reissue. In addition to two standards ('My Old Flame' and 'It's Only a Paper Moon'), there are four obscure originals and McLean's 'Dig' (based on 'Sweet Georgia Brown'). Excellent early hard bopflac, with complete artwork (+ LP Covers).

Lennie Niehaus, best known for his scores for Clint Eastwood films in the 1980s and '90s, was an excellent cool-toned bop altoist back in the '50s who spent time working with Stan Kenton. For this album, he is heard on two different occasions providing arrangements and alto solos for octets. With such fine players as either Jack Montrose or Bill Perkins on tenor, Bob Gordon or Pepper Adams on baritone, and other top West Coast jazz musicians, Niehaus primarily performs cool jazz. The inventive charts (which on the later date utilize a French horn and a tuba) and the superior, concise solos make this a set well worth acquiring by fans of the West Coast jazz sound of the '50sflac, with complete artwork.

Dark Eyes alternate take/# (9:51)This has plenty of great players and lots of amazing music. Getz, Dizzy Gillespie (tpt), and Sonny Stitt (as) are great, as are John Lewis (p) and Herb Ellis (g).The modern jazz revolution which came to be known as bebop was distinguished by a level of melodic-harmonic complexity and rhythmic brinkmanship which required the most elevated levels of instrumental virtuosity imaginable. As if to drive the point home, composers such as trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie crafted certain tunes to function as musical obstacle courses, which quickly separated the men from boys-without mercy. Such is the premise on For Musicians Only, save that with a driving rhythm section keyed by bassist supreme Ray Brown, and saxophone masters Stan Getz and Sonny Stitt on board as the other horns, there is no shortage of musical fiber.
Brisk tempos and challenging chord changes are the order of the day, with Gillespie's anthemic 'Bebop' setting a daunting standard. The trumpeter is in peak form here and on a riveting 'Lover Come Back to Me,' articulating breathtaking runs and high-wire rhythmic variations with all the fluidity of a saxophone, but with a tart, crackling tone all his own. Stitt, as is wont, plays with incredible speed and rhythmic articulation, and anyone who visualizes Getz as no more than the arbiter of cool tenor, should take note of this sheep in wolf's clothing's relentless melodic intensity on 'Wee (Allen's Alley).'

Tyner debuted six of his originals, and although none became standards (perhaps the best known are 'The High Priest' and 'All My Yesterdays'), the music is quite colorful and advanced for the period. Taking its lead from Mr. Marsalis, a saxophonist of obstinate candor, the band has become both looser and more imposingly self-assured.
“Metamorphosen,” its new album, captures that dynamic almost perfectly. The title may be a touch misleading, though, since transformation isn’t really the point here. What the music on “Metamorphosen” more readily suggests is a refinement of convictions, an incremental sort of progress. On the whole the album expands on ideas that have preoccupied Mr. Marsalis throughout his career: strong melody, tumultuous yet unambiguous rhythm, and a resiliently pragmatic relationship to the jazz tradition. He contributes just one composition, “Jabberwocky,” but he makes it count, producing a theme with a corkscrew momentum and a style knowingly evocative of Lennie Tristano.
Kenny Dorham's Backyard
(On it he plays alto saxophone rather than his usual tenor or soprano.) Then there are at least two songs by each of his band mates — the drummer Jeff (Tain) Watts, the bassist Eric Revis and the pianist Joey Calderazzo — along with Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-a- Ning.”Though this repertory is eclectic, it isn’t remotely a grab bag. Calderazzo’s writing encourages a flowing, diaphanous lyricism from the ensemble; Mr. Watts strikes up a frankly exploratory intensity; Mr. Revis works with intervals in a way that yields a kind of dark intrigue.
It all fits because every piece highlights a facet of the band — and because each musician, starting with Mr. Marsalis, commits himself fully throughout.Club Des Belugas - Caviar and Minority Tunes (2009)Future Jazz / Downtempo / Latin / Ambient / Chillout CD 1:01. Early Daiquiris02.
